Facts: My father was an athlete and coach and he taught my brother and I how to throw. We were both successful. My abilities helped me to gain a college degree. We enjoy the throws as a family. I’ve raised three sons who all were throwers. I have attended track meets annually across this great state of Texas for the past 40 years and have come to the same realization that my father and brother have, the throws are in need of basic teaching. When I was in high school at the district meet level, the top three discus throws were in the 180 ft. range. The shot put top three throws were in the 58-60ft ranges. Today we see discus throws in the 140-50’s winning men’s meets and throws under 100 getting into the finals in the women’s. Men’s shot put results has winners in the 48 ft range in the AAAAAA division and in the women’s side the high twenties and low 30’s are placing.

In 2017, we saw a wave of men’s throwers like we’ve not seen. These were primarily from the Woodlands, Sugarland and Katy area. The men’s shot put saw a 70+ ft throw and many many high 60’s. The discus was similar in results. Its high time we give Texas athletes a chance to reach these heights each year. Thank God for this resurgence. It shows that with focused coaching and athletes that have a desire, these distances can be reached.
